FAQ/Leather Information

How do I customize or add personalization to my product?

Admittedly I am not tech savvy so my website is pretty basic. I find it easiest to correspond via email to discuss details about personalization. Please send images, or ideas to my email hideandhusk@gmail.com  just include your order number

How do I care for my product?

I recommend using a leather balm or conditioner. I use Fiebings' Aussie Leather conditioner for leather products that get wet or start to feel harder than normal. (This is will darken the leather at first, so I do suggest testing in a smaller area.) I also use a homemade balm for areas that experience heavier wear and tear, or to help weatherproof a product. I make this using a mix of 100% neatsfoot oil and local beeswax.

What is order now pay later, and why is it $5?

The option to order now pay later is just a way to help me keep order. I get several requests to make items on a daily basis, and I found that this is a more reliable system than relying on my memory alone. Unfortunately, due to scammers I can no longer offer this option for free. I will refund the $5 even if you do not decide to follow through with your order.

Do you repair shoes?

No. We have done some basic repairs such as zipper replacements and such. We do not re-sole shoes. This is certainly not our specialty.

Do you do other repairs?

This is a case by case question. We have done many repairs to purses, chaps, radio straps, etc. I am more than willing to see what you need, but cannot guarantee that we will be able to help. I have had customers bring in items that were beyond repair and I was able to recreate the product. (I will not recreate someone else's designs or work unless they are no longer in the business. I appreciate other crafters creativity and prefer not to take business away from them.) I cannot repair fake leather. I understand many mainstream brands are expensive, that does not always indicate they are made from quality materials. Pricing for repairs varies, we will make sure you know a price range before taking on the work.

Where are you located, and what are your hours?

I work full time as a firefighter/paramedic. I do leatherwork part time with my wife, Amanda. We do this from our home located outside of Troy, OH. I do not offer our location unless you have an appointment for privacy reasons. I do not have set hours, all meetings are by appointment only.

General Information about our leather.

We use full grain cowhide leathers. We have tried all types and tanneries, and have chosen our favorites over time. I can do custom work, but I typically offer specific colors and finishes.

Prefinished leather will darken slightly over time but holds color pretty well.

Natural leather will age, and it changes more drastically than prefinished leather. Personally, I think natural leather looks its' worst when you receive it, with some time it ages to a beautiful caramel color with darkened edges. Some things are worth the wait, this is one of those things.

All our leather products are made to last forever. The "leather" products you buy at retail chains are made from various materials that crack and peel. I have explained this by comparing leather to wood products. Our leather is like solid hardwood furniture, but the "genuine leather" at retail stores is similar to pressed sawdust stuff that cheap bookshelves are made of. Hardwood furniture will last a lifetime. That furniture that comes in a box looks ok at first, but will soon need replaced.  You get what you pay for.

**We do use laserable leatherette for some of our patches. This is a faux leather that is made specifically for laser engraving. We chose to go this route because of the stark contrast created with this product. It is perfect for displaying your brand. Hat patches typically do not experience the wear and tear that belts, wallets and other products do. You can choose to have real leather patches made, just inquire by email if you prefer this. We can let you compare and choose what you like best.
